Pregnancy and Postpartum Care

Acupuncture has safely treated women before, during, and after pregnancy for thousands of years. Marisa typically treats women throughout their pregnancy, from preconception to postpartum. Acupuncture can help assure a healthy pregnancy, and address any health issues that may arise during pregnancy. Acupuncture has even been shown to prevent many complications that arise during pregnancy.

A Note About Safety
Marisa’s post-graduate work has focused extensively on prenatal care. She is well aware of the acupuncture points to avoid during pregnancy. As a mother, Marisa understands an expectant mother’s concern for her safety and the safety of her baby. Marisa invites her patients to express their thoughts, concerns, and feelings throughout all stages of pregnancy. You and your baby’s comfort and safety are of primary importance to Marisa.

A healthy baby starts with a healthy conception. Acupuncture prior to conception helps strengthen and balance a woman’s health system for the incredible work required of her body to nourish a growing baby. If you and your partner are having difficulty conceiving, acupuncture can increase your chances for conception.

First Trimester
At this stage of pregnancy, tremendous changes take place in the mother’s body and the fetus experiences rapid growth. At the end of the first trimester Marisa gives a special traditional treatment using the “beautiful baby point.” She gently stimulates this point with a gold needle to promote a happy, healthy, and beautiful baby. It is claimed that stimulating this point minimizes the transmission of toxins from the mother to baby, increases the health of the growing fetus and its resistance to disease. The treatment also tonifies the mother’s qi. Mothers are encouraged to visit Marisa weekly during the first trimester.

Acupuncture is beneficial for:
• Morning sickness, nausea, and vomiting
• Anxiety
• Insomnia
• Fatigue
• Preventing miscarriage
• Anemia
• Common cold, flu, and infections
• Constipation

Second Trimester
The “Beautiful Baby” treatment (see First Trimester) is given again at the end of the second trimester. Marisa recommends that expecting mothers visit once or twice a month during the second trimester.

Acupuncture is beneficial for:
• Pelvic, back, and rib pain
• Sciatica
• Ligament pain
• Heartburn and indigestion
• Insomnia
• Urinary tract, bladder, and kidney infections
• Shortness of breath
• Hemorrhoids
• Varicose veins

Third Trimester
Acupuncture can ease the aches and pains associated with the growing fetus and prepare the body for labor and delivery. Mothers are encouraged to visit Marisa weekly during the third trimester.

Acupuncture is beneficial for:
• Swelling
• Back and hip pain
• Insomnia
• Inducing labor
• Breech position
• Relieving pain during labor
• Hypertension
• Gestational Diabetes
• Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
• Anxiety about upcoming birth and transition to motherhood

Mothers are often deeply depleted from giving birth and caring for a newborn baby. Acupuncture can help balance and strengthen the mother after birth and through the early months of motherhood. At this time, Marisa likes to give a special “Mother Roasting” treatment using moxa. This treatment deeply warms and nourishes the mother after her birth experience. It has been used by many cultures throughout the world as a form of post-partum care.

Acupuncture is beneficial for:
• Insufficient lactation
• Engorgement/mastitis
• Post-partum bleeding
• Fatigue
• Swelling of pelvic floor
• Caesarian Section pain
• Easing transition from birth to motherhood.
